Best practice for EAL. - Wednesday 6th Nov 1pm-3pm via Teams

We would like to invite all teaching staff to attend

As the proportion of EAL pupils in schools grows, the role of overseeing EAL is becoming an area of specialist responsibility in increasing numbers of schools. This course will explore how schools can establish a robust baseline assessment of EAL learners' English language skills on first arrival, identify appropriate targets and next steps, and track progress against expected rates of language development. Staff will provided with an EAL Assessment Framework to use which shows evidence of progress, particularly for those pupils without prior attainment data and those working well below age-related expectations. The strategies and resources explored and provided will enable staff to explore the potential barriers to successful learning for EAL learners. It will provide clear guidance on expectations of progress and identification of whole class/intervention strategies that can enable children to access learning and meet age appropriate expectations; these approaches are equally relevant to monolingual pupils who struggle within school.

Meeting the EYFS profile requirements for EAL for Early Language needs- Tuesday 14th January 1-3pm via Teams

This session is for Early Years Leaders and Reading Leaders

This course will identify the requirements for EAL learners within the EYFS setting, as required in the EYFS profile. It will provide key strategies to support language development through quality first teaching and learning in a culturally and linguistically supportive environment for all learners, especially EAL, in EYFS. It will provide practical suggestions for activities that introduce children to a diversity of cultures, which reflect the cultures of all children within the setting and wider UK, opening children’s eyes to different cultures, ethnicities and faiths. This will enable practitioners to develop approaches to explore different cultures in Early Years that avoid stereotyping and tokenism and help children explore their own and others’ identities. It will also identify strategies to develop the use of first language within the setting through the assessment of EAL learners in EYFS. This will enable staff to identify effective ways to support children's first language and use appropriate strategies which will promote English language development for EAL learners.
